The Roswell is a shining example of what having a custom putter is all about. The notching in the rear of the flange was done on a whim, when a memory of another putter from several years ago, crept into my subconscious and challenged my ability. The idea hit very late at night and it was early morning before this one was roughed out and had taken the shape that you see in these pictures.
The notches do serve to frame the ball, and are not purely for looks. The sweet spot is precisely in the center of the smallest notch and this putter rolls the ball very, very well.
Hosel choice was a matter of personal preference and the sample pictures show a ncek made of 303 SS, welded to my base head of 1018 Carbon steel. When the finish chosen is a Raw Torch finish, this mixing of metals really has a chance to shine.
It is possible that a base head made of 303 SS will be an option sometime in mid-2010, so don’t hesitate to inquire on this option, if you are looking for a putter that is a little less maintenance-intensive. The carbon steel, matched with a Raw Torch’d finish will require that it be oiled and kept dry, between rounds. Not everyone is up for that, but if you choose the Roswell or a similar shaping, the extra effort is well-rewarded.
